Google Boosts Effects of Mobile-Friendly Algorithm

Google announced another change to its search algorithm to boost the effects of its mobile-friendly algorithm that it first launched last April.  Google said the update will occur“beginning in May,” and it “increases the effect of the [mobile-friendly] ranking signal.” Google noted that if your site is already mobile-friendly, you do not have to worry, because “you will not be impacted by this update.” Famous last words, right?
The update is expected to rollout gradually due to the length of time it can take for Google's crawlers to access each web page. Depending on how fast Google crawls and indexes all of the pages on your site, the full impact of this update may not be felt for some time.  Experts believe that this update will have less impact than the original mobile-friendly update, which came to be infamously known as “Mobilegeddon.”
The basic idea for Google is to offer even more of an incentive for publishers to create mobile-friendly web pages. These days most publishers have mobile-friendly web pages, but for the few that do not, beware.  Over the last few months, Google has also introduced AMP, which makes sites load even faster on mobile.  See https://www.ampproject.org/ for more info. AMP pages are featured prominently though Google does not use AMP in its ranking algorithm...at least not yet.
