FACEBOOK EMPOWERS WOMEN

Blog Post 7

In a world of #METOO and female equality or inclusion writing, companies are reaching beyond the norm to empower professional women in the workplace and society. After the hashtag was launched in October 2017, more than 17M women have spoken out as silence breakers and spoken about themes such as sexual harassment and even inclusion writing.

In preparation for Women’s International Day that is celebrated every year on March 8, Facebook is one of these companies looking to empower women-owned businesses in 23 countries. Led by COO and feminist Sheryl Sandberg, the program is expected to help working women to find better resources and empower other females in getting credit. On the sidelines, the company will also be launching memes, cards and other goodies to help its users celebrate international women’s day through the platform.

The power of the #METOO movement and the empowerment behind working females has raised plenty awareness not only in Facebook, but also companies such as McDonalds and M&Ms who have developed campaigns using the iconic “M” and shifting it upside down to represent a “W” for “Woman.” These are examples of the power behind a hashtag that has become a movement and helped people speak up about topics that raise awareness. The silence breakers, as they call themselves, are not alone, and this movement has created an opportunity for many companies to participate on this awareness as supporters such as the aforementioned ones, and others to capitalize via the hashtag or the movement per se. Where I want to go with this affirmation, and the article published on March 7, 2018 called “Facebook Just made it easier for female entrepreneurs to connect” is that social media platforms, and social movements are the nests for momentum to create awareness, raise interest and opportunity to position an idea, brand or situation. News coverage has been flooded with stories, and there has been opportunity to change.

Facebook is joining the movement and capitalizing on an idea, besides from helping women around the world to connect.
