According to a Pew survey, 59 percent of people think it be easy to quit social media. So, of course, social media is NOT addictive. I wish the article stopped there. Nope, it didn't. It went further to compare gamblers denial and surprisingly 59 percent of gambler think they have a system. In other words, six in ten people are in denial about their addiction to social media.
Well, how is this relevant to Digital Marketing. Wait for it, wait for it.... This result helps us understand the longevity of social media and companies in that space. Habit die old, there is no doubt about it. This is probably one of the reasons why Facebook's decision to buy Instagram for humongous amount is right. Social media companies are in the business of addiction. They more addicts they acquire the better it is for business.
Consumers should be on the look out. Especially teenagers who are particularly vulnerable to social pressures. A good marketer being aware of this addiction would remain well within ethical boundaries when engaging young social media users.
