With Facebook continuing to gain popularity among the 18 and under crowd, parents are becoming increasingly stressed with the online interactions that their kids are experiencing. This has led to the passing of The Amy Hestir Student Protection Act or also known as the "Facebook Law." While the law is quite long, there are two sentences in the law that refer to Facebook and that is why it has been nicknamed the "Facebook Law." The two sentences specifically are:
No teacher shall establish, maintain, or use a work-related internet site unless such site is vailable to school administrators and the child's legal custodian, physical custodian, or legal guardian.
No teacher shall establish, maintain, or use a nonwork-related internet site which allows exclusive access with a current or former student.
According to the congresswoman who sponsored the bill, the idea was to prevent a school teacher who was found guilty of sexual assault from transfering school districts. She says that she does not want the law to prevent teachers from joining social networking sites or friending their students. The idea behind this law is to make everything transparent in order to prevent any misconduct.
