Google Wallet?

It sounds like a great idea. I like the idea; I endorse the concept; but I'm just curious how it can ever become mainstream?

If 70% of all U.S. commerce derived from small business, how can Google make this wallet concept affordable and mainstream to these small business owner? In addition to the credit card fees these small merchants have to pay, they also have to pay extra for a Google Wallet reader now?

I want this concept to work because other countries can adopt it as well. Work on this more Google and impress us picky customers.

Not sure if you saw this, but it looks like advertising has done a great job answering you question regarding how we are going to enable these small business merchants to accept payments. Below your posts sits a picture of the intuit credit card reader ( similar to the square reader which seems to have grown rapidly in popularity ) that simply connects to many of the mobile phones/ipads and allows any merchant with a mobile device and their software to accept credit cards. With the mobile web and a simple plastic utility that connects to your phone ( we would assume they will develop the same technology for NFC) , it looks like it will be easier to enable merchants in remote locations to accept these types of payments. With regards to the charges, the increased competition and lack of large setup costs ( machines, phone lines etc), it might also reduce those fees and enable these merchants to pay less on those fees.

I think that this system could be successful because of its convenience. However I can't stop thinking about the Bank of America case we has in the Managing the Marketing Program class. The case describes how slow and complicate it was for customers to change their payment habits. While I don't doubt Google will quite easily convince early adopters, I think that the masses may be reticent as new payment methods are adopted slowly in the U.S.
