Big Mac goes viral!

McDonald's launches an new LivingSocial offer for young fast food eating generation. Among other activities that take place on Facebook and Twitter there is a new Facebook app which is created to offer people better deals. For example, a customer may find a booklet for five Big Macs and five big fries just for 13$ which is twice cheaper than a deal in the actual McDonald's restaurant. This is considered 'the largest daily deal run with a fast-food chain'.

A Social media team of McDonald's suggests that LivingSocial is a great idea especially in December when everybody is looking for deals so that McDonald's may easily go after young generation that is considered 'deal seeker'. This idea also may become a basis for TV campaign followed by social one and present Bic Mac as a rock star, an iconic brand and the most favorite American food. A company plans to extand this campaign by adding an off-line marketing event when people are invited to 'parties' organized by Big Mac and it features their Facebook photos afterwards.

Big Mac also plans to conduct one small off-line event in the upcoming month and host a series of afterparties in Miami Beach to get people used to have Big Macs as snacks instead of random sandwiches for the late-night dinner.

Overall, this Social media campaign is structured and well organized, however, it contradicts mainstream that is aware of being healthier. In recent days McDonald's tried to become organic by offering vegetables in  Happy Meals and by making  its portions smaller. This campaign tries to attract youth to fast food  for lower price, however, it does not appeal to those who are conscious about what to eat, hence, it may not be as successful as Social Media team of McDonald's thinks.

I actually had a completely different reaction when I learned that McDonalds offered a deal through Living Social.

Ok, here are the facts: America is Fat. Like really really fat. Do we honestly need a discount on fast food? How are people going to fight the temptation of Mickey Ds that sit on every street corner in their neighborhood when they’re getting a ridiculously good deal. How good? Try 5 big macs and 5 large fries for $13! That’s 50 % off and less than $1 for each item. And for those of you that enjoy counting calories, that’s a total of 2,700 calories, 145 grams of fat and 5,200 mg of sodium…just for the big macs. Forget about the fries- you don’t even want to know.

Now what? Is this the beginning of a new era of fast food pricing at costs we only saw 30 years ago? What is this going to mean for our BMI, America? And who is this primarily going to affect? Sure, McDonalds put the cap at 1 million booklets, but now they’re not just targeting lower income and urban areas like they typically do. They’re reaching out to audiences like, well, me. And every other boy, girl, man, women across the country that subscribes to living social- all 10 million of them. With sales and deals flooding our inboxes on a daily basis, it’s hard to ever turn down anything that says 50 %. I can’t delete those emails even I don’t want whatever it is they’re selling! Suffice it to say that I do happen to enjoy a Big Mac every once in a while…but now I have to eat FIVE to make the $13 worth it. Geez. Maybe I’m just upset because I bought the deal and I know exactly how I’m going to feel when I use the coupon tonight.

McDonalds, I hate you.

Well, thanks for this comment, DB! I do agree with you on the fact that America is extremely fat. And people better reduce their fast food consumption. However, I have to point out that unlike 30 years ago there are tons of opportunities to eat differently out there and people make their choice volunteerly. Given that every single food store tries to be 'organic' (what means 'organic' here? it's been something like a month since my 'organic' milk has being stored in my fridge and hasn't being spoit yet).

If you are talking about an evil of trading up poorer society layer in favor of McDonalds then I may argue that people who cannot afford spending money on good value food will not eat healthy even without McDonalds.

One more thing about this deal. I assume that when you get 5 bigmacs and fries you don't get them just for yourself. This is done for youth who get together for a party or any social gathering and wants to have fun. Fun is usually followed by uncountable galoons of beer (which is even worse than McDonalds) and of course they are not thinking of ordering suchi or duck fuagra for dinner. All they need is chips, sandwiches and fries. So here we go. They get it for 13$. This doesn't make them slimer, but what do you expect from party food? People drink rubbish and eat rubbish accordingly. BUT people cannot party 24/7, which means that those deals they may take into consideration when they find at least 2-3 friends to have fun with.

Your comment is absolutely legit and fair. However, I think your feeling of McDonald's is a little bit exaggerated in terms of this new deal. As for me my BMI is fine and I don't think its gonna suffer if i call my guys for a party and get some fatty bigmacs and fries on a friday night :)

Stay healthy!
