Gamifying restaurants for better service

With Facebook making social gaming such as Farmville a national phenomenon, and Angry Birds leading the mobile app popularity contest, Objective Logistics has created an online gaming system for restaurant waitstaff. Objective Logistics' new software, Muse, uses data from customer payments, including sales, tips, surveys, and customer acquisition data to track employee performance. Employees who perform the best win the shifts they prefer. Since its implentation, restaurants using the software have seen close to a 2% increase in sales and 11% increase in gratuities. Future versions include advising employees how to improve performance (e.g. "misson" to sell more desserts to customers who normally only order appetizers).

It is exciting to see how online gaming can permeate the workforce and even make it more productive. Muse is a fun way to create friendly competition while increasing overall revenue for restaurants. It will be interesting to see how Muse can translate to other industries that can increase customer service overall. For example, I can see how this might work in retail stores such as Banana Republic and Best Buy or large fast food chains such as Starbucks. Mini goals can be given tied to small prizes (e.g. person who is voted best smile by customers wins an extra hour of lunch break). Assuming that Muse can be tracked through the mobile phone, this application could potentially be a game changer when it comes to increasing employee motivation.
