ESPN: A Mobile Example to Emulate

Hot on the heels of today’s discussion on mobile technology, here comes a stellar example of a company that has figured out how to use mobile design to the fullest. According to this article on Mashable, ESPN is the “alpha and omega” of sports publishers.

What separates ESPN from the vast majority of companies attempting to utilize this new platform, is the fact that is has taken into account the different devices that people might be using the access the information. The design for a smartphone device is different than the design for a tablet; each is created with the specific features and uses of the device in mind. Also, both the smartphone and tablet versions have clear links back to the main ESPN.com website for additional information and features that aren’t available on the phone/tablet interface.

Another impressive feature of ESPN’s mobile design is that it is fully integrated with the website. When somebody registers on their phone and then subsequently goes to the website, the email opt-in immediately recognizes that the person has registered by phone: “Welcome! You originally created your account on a mobile device. We’d like to know a bit more about you.” This makes information gathering a simple process that organically helps build ESPN’s subscriber base.
