It's that time of year again. Mailboxes around the country are bulgging with shopping catalogs and that time old tradition of Christmas cards. This is a uniquely American concept. Sending photos of your family and updates of your children's accomplishments doesn't seem to translate as well in other corners of the globe. Nevermind, the U.S. Postal Service estimates 2.7 BILLION letters will be sent this holiday season alone!
So how does this tie into digital marketing? Recent years have seen an increase in online cards. Personally, I feel the only thing worse than a crowded mailbox is a crowded virtual one. That said, companies like Paperless Post have become more and more popular.
Where this gets interesting is that traditional card companies are now jumping into the virtual bandwagon. According to an article by the New York Times, this holiday season the expectation is that more and more people will send out their holiday cards via the internet. Red Stamp and Cartolina, two companies that make traditional cards, havw now upgraded to inlcude apps for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that allow users to send cards virtually.
Businesses started doing this years ago, but it is only this season that the virtual personal holiday card seems to have caught on in a mainstream way. For many, displaying holiday cards sent by loved ones on the family mantel has also been part of this tradition. Getting one of these cards via email somehow just doesn't have the same heartwarming effect.
