Digital Marketing Tidbits

By: Alice Lam

Following in the footsteps of Google Analytics, Twitter now has analytics to help optimize data for its users.  It would be interesting to see how much this will actually help e-marketers because although that would definitely give people more data, data is only good if you know what you can do with it namely to create more reach and penetration for your brand/product or service.  Although Twitter has not create ads in the same way as Facebook and Google has done, it is pretty confident to say that this will be a model that they will be adopting in the near future.

Another interesting trend is that luxury brands are using YouTube as a way to advertise.  Coming up on top is Victoria's Secret, followed by Chanel with the nebulous videos of Brad Pitt's perfume ad getting millions of views.  It is nice to see luxury brands try to pivot and get more outside of the box instead of having fancy flash websites that doesn't seem to work because the most people don't have the plug-ins.

Probably the most interesting tidbit is that consumers are now demanding more response from the brands via social media.  The convenience of social media is great for advertisers because they can really reach their consumers but it comes at a cost.  People are able to write scathing comments which can easily do a lot of damage very quickly.  Many companies have been quick to respond and have troubleshooted with great customer service.  But over time, will the immediacy of social media create a new influx of more demanding consumers?  My guess is "yes" because the reason why people want to use social media comes back to the premise that people want to be heard.  Let's just hope that just not too many people want to be heard too much for your company's sake.
