SEO for Mobile Apps - Not important says Foursquare

The fact that mobile app data lives outside the purview of Google is a fascinating insight. What would happen if the world suddenly became all sign-on mobile apps? Would we need hundreds of search bars? Is that world a better place?

Foursquare and Yelp have chosen two different views at making their data "google-friendly" with the former facing some tough results. Users are less engaged and the company has been forced to split its once popular "check-in app" into two pieces.

The key here is what they are doing with their data. Yelp is choosing to become the "top result" for Google and driving significant traffic to its property whereas Foursquare is choosing to live and die by its users.

My opinion: Search will evolve and while generic today, search will become separate between facts vs opinions. Google has dominated the search for facts but there is still territory to conquer for recommendations precisely because the results are so personal.
