While Google Glass is no longer a rarity in one corner of our country in Silicon Valley,
the rest of the world is still eager / fearful / uncertain about this amazing invention. So, a woman named Sophia Dominguez decided to step up to this show and tell task (she was not paid by
Google). For five weeks non-stop, Sophia
wore the technology as she traveled to five countries and eight cities to expose
this technology to new people in different communities and capture their reactions.
As she predicted, each culture had a different reaction to her
unusual eyewear: Some were concerned with privacy, others were pleasantly surprised, while
others simply ignored her. But Sophia kept on, and spent time interacting with anyone who were curious, translating to
local languages, taking photos, and filming people’s reactions as she wore the
glasses.
She then entered her film Featurette in the New York
International Film Festival as Sophia through Glass.
As of April 2014, the glasses are available for purchase by
anyone who wants / can afford it. The future of ocular technology is compelling
but will take time for masses to adopt it. just like cellphones or earphones,
people embrace certain technology into their lives so seamlessly. Maybe one day
people will think back to the days when these glasses were just introduced and
think, ‘duh, how could they not be part of everyone’s lives?’ It’s kind of amusing
to think that we as a global race are still learning to let go of certain
conventions, habits. These new interactions with technology will only reshape
our ability to live our lives.
