As a British newspaper The Times reports, internet advertising in the UK will surpass Television advertising in 2010. According to the internet advertising bureau, by year end, internet advertising will surpass national press advertising in the UK, whcih currently accounts for 11% of national advertising spend. The article reports that internet advertising in the first half of 2006 experienced a year over year increase of 40% to 917 million pounds. The internet market in the UK is now three times the size of radio advertising. It was also reported that 10 million households use the internet in the UK, and this has been the main cause for increased online ads.
The steady increase in broadband use in the world has turned into a rapid increase. The UK marrket, with more advanced wireless technology, could be a sign of where the US market is heading. The increase in online use worldwide will spur more than online advertising in my opinion. The new web marketplace will provide opportunities across the board. The big issue will be the growing gap between those with and those without access to internet. In many cash rich companies with large upper and middle class populations will increasingly be able to benefit monetarily and intellectually from the web opportunities, while many in third world countries and poorer regions will have less access and therefore continue to fall behind the curve. This is an underserved market and will need to be addressed, before the economic and health disparity among individuals worldwide increases.
