The Politics of the Internet

It should come as no surprise that internet advertising is increasing for all industries and political campaigns are no exception.  In a recent article on emarketer.com ["Online Political Advertising Gets a Sharp Bump Over 2008"], it's estimated that political advertisements on the internet have increased from $22 Million in 2008 to $159 Million for 2012.  This represents an increase of over 600%.  Advertising has increased in all mediums (i.e. TV, radio, etc.); however, direct mail and newspapers grew the slowest.

Clearly, the Obama administration's strategic online campaign in 2008 was one of the decisive tactics which took Republicans by surprise.  Four years later, the right has learned from their mistakes.  And with the Koch brothers stepping up with financial support, they are organized and poised replicate that success.  I suspect that the 2016 election will see internet spending surpass most print media advertising.
