Facebook Loses Ground with Teenage Users

There are many different social media outlets that are competing for the attention of the teenage user.  13-17 year old users are increasingly gravitating towards mobile and tablet based apps - such as Snapchat and Twitter - to feed their need for online social interaction.  They are shying away from Facebook, in favor of applications that work well/quickly on mobile, and that allow for more privacy than can be expected when posting directly to a website.

Teenage users represent an important demographic for Facebook; as the company continues to seek ways to increase mobile advertising revenue, it must find a way to cater to this segment of the population, which is projected to spend more time on mobile-based social media sites than ever before.

Facebook must continue its pursuit to build a mobile-friendly application, while continually acquiring other companies that cater to this important demographic (i.e. Instagram).  The success of social networking (and mobile advertising) is tied, directly, to the manner in which this age group chooses to consume/contribute to social media.
