What is a Klout Score?

Klout, a company founded in 2009, created a scoring system to measure your influence in social media.  Per the article, "[Klout] assesses online influence by using data from Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram and several other social media platforms.  Each user is assigned a Klout score between one and 100."  In order to have a Klout score, users must sign up and agree to link their social accounts to Klout.

Does online influence matter and if it does, why is it important to increase your Klout score?  Online influence matters if you are a marketer, author, and anyone else who wants to influence the opinions of large groups of people.  A Klout score is a way to quantify the amount of influence you have, and this is particularly important if you are a marketer.  Social media marketing is notoriously hard to quantify in terms of ROI and although a Klout score will not get a marketer to an ROI, it does provide an estimate of of the brand's influence.  Furthermore, a Klout score also allows for benchmarking since it increases as the brand's influence increases.

According to Gina Carr, an entrepreneur, speaker and marketing expert, marketing is becoming increasingly personal and targeted.  To that end, she recommends following the ABCs of social engagement to increase one's Klout score: "A is "always be engaging," B is "be consistent" and C is "connect."
