Microsoft bets on the mobile-desktop convergence

In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, a senior executive from Windows Commercial, Stella Chernyak, claimed that the company is directing its efforts towards a consolidating position on the mobile-desktop market. Its "true substitute to a laptop", Surface Pro 2, will finally have a dock station next year.
According to the interview, the chips used to be the main challenge for the complete substitution of desktops to tablets: heavy programs, such as Microsoft Office, could not be run and thus limited what tablets could be used for. However, now both Lenovo and Dell will join the tablet market equipped with Windows 8.1 and a new Intel chip that will allow it to have the same weight and volume.
This launch is expected to overcome the necessity of developing and managing different app versions for smartphones, tablets and laptops - saving everyone a lot of time and money.
