Android overtakes Windows (and iPhone) in smartphones

Edited from FT's Maija Palmer, May 19, 2010

Sales of smartphones using Google's Android operating system have overtaken Micorsoft's Windows mobile phones for the first time.

Sales of Android phones accounted for just under 10% of all smartphones sold globally in Q110. Android phone sales have also overtaken Apple's iPhone in the North American market, accounting for 26.6% of units sold, compared with 22.1% of iPhone.

The main advantage of Android compared to Apple's iPhone is the fact that several manafacturers use the Android system and is hence available on some 20 different phones.
