Google looks to make peace with Murdoch
Eric Schimdt, CEO of Google, said the internet company had had talks with R. Murdoch and other newspaper proprietors about helping run subscription services for their online sites.
Murdoch has repeatedly criticised Google for undermining newspapares by allowing internet users too much access to thier valueable news content.
As a reaction, some News Corp's newspapers (The Times and Sunday Times) will withdraw their articles from Google's search engine. However, said Schmidt, Google could still have a role: perhaps helping subscribers of the news sites to pay for content through Google Checkout.
"Google is a platform, not a competitor to newspapers", that's why Schimdt's proposal for using Checkout have met with a wary response from media groups, however, with some arguing that it had more to gain than the newspapers from such an arrangement.
Mr Schimdt was keen to stress that Google was not interested in competing with newspapers for content.
