Haul Videos

Go ahead and add a new niche to the plethora of video bloggers (or vloggers) out there. Haul videos are a new way for young women to show off their recent retail purchases to family, friends, and the rest of the online world. After a shopping spree, these women will methodically discuss their purchases as well as offer fashion and beauty advice on a webcam. There is a surprisingly large following to see how the posters are spending their money (sometimes). Many women are offered free products, sometimes contingent on a favorable web review. What most of them don't know, is that the FTC ruled two years ago that they must disclose if the products were given to them during their review.

Haul videos have turned into a lucrative business for some. As the NYT article below mentions, one 19-year old Bronx bartender pulls in $1000 a month through YouTube's "partners" program, which gives its members a share of the advertising profits that appear along with their videos.

Though haul videos seem a little vain to me, I can see the benefits to the purchasing decision by helping to weed out bad products.
