Can Twitter Accurately Predict Election Results

http://mashable.com/2012/08/01/twitter-politics/

The new Twitter Political Index was announced today to track people's sentiments about political figures. Twitter is known as a real time outlet with opinions from around the globe, so it makes sense that people would trust its results. Using sentiment analysis, Twitter's results have closely mirrored those of traditional polls, indicating that the algorithms might be working well.
I think that this would be a place that many users interested in politics will look at closely as a gauge into the upcoming elections. But I think that the information will only be able to provide a good analysis of big time politics. As most people are not tweeting about secondary elections or second tier politicians, there would not be enough data to indicate accurate results. I wouldn't eliminate the Gallup polls just yet.
