Threat to Google Search - Mobile Apps

Google has traditionally maintained its dominance in search over content published on websites. Infact their dominance was so complete that VC firms have never invested in a search startup for last decade until more recent times. Reason for renewed interest in search startups is a phenomenal growth of mobile apps and the time spent by users on such apps. Google thinks that it is missing out on all the information that it can gather from consumers who spend time on apps. Infact its view is that the trend of apps is going to increase and this will become a serious threat to google dominance.

An interesting deal was reported in Wall Street Journal a few dayas back - Google has convinced the biggest e-tailer in India, Flipkart to build a mobile website that is powered by Google back-end technology. Flipkart a few months back had made a bold decision to completely abandon its website and shift to a mobile app. However a few months later it decided to create a mobile specific website that exists outside the app eco-system. It is at this point that Google asked Flipkart to try out its new innovations and build its mobile website that leverages on Chrome's innovations. Chrome now can send notifications, just like apps, when a mobile website is opened on Chrome browser.

Traditionally, websites have a poor viewability when opened from websites and this is a reason most websites are using latest technologies to make website both desktop and mobile compatible. The main problem can be narrowed down to Google search engine's inability to crawl, index and display content on apps as easily as it can do for websites. Google has been seriously working on innovations around its Chrome browser which essentially address this problem. It would be interesting if the 'next Google' comes out with a search engine exclusively dedicated to searching across mobile apps. That would become a serious threat to Google's search engine and will have serious implications on the company's advertising revenue.
