As of last summer, Google has one trillion web pages under its belt. However, the crawlable Web is just a tip of the iceberg, according to an NY Times article. Major search engines are still trying to penetrate the so-called Deep Web or databases that are set up to respond to typed queries. In order to tap the content beyond the surface web indexed by standard search engines, Google’s Deep Web search strategy involves sending out a program to analyze the contents of every database it encounters. However, Google faces the challenge of improving search experience but not alienating customers with significant search result format changes. Deep Web technologies can interconnect data among different sources and help companies use data in new and cheaper ways.
