The use of the mobile device in those countries are to educated the individuals and the community, which contributes to empower them, enrich their lifestyle, and boost the economy as a whole.
In recent years, there are groups that recycle and reset used laptops in developing countries and send those to the developing countries. The laptops are provided to the children in school in the areas for education.
Neither mobile devices nor laptop itself do not generate much revenue or do not have much impact on the growth of the economy. What is more impactful and meaningful is to appropriate services and softwares/apps to maximize the use of the hardware. There are big business opportunities to improve the level of individuals in the community (long-term investment) and to grow the local economies if companies plan and offer services. Although, money generated from an individual is much smaller than that of in wealthy nations, the absolute number of users and subscription makes the potential market size much larger (and grows at faster rate).
Just like the estimated commercial market size of microfinance, $250 billion, digital devices in the developing regions can change the regions if companies do it right. And the long-term impact to the entire community and economy will be enormous.
