Scrubbed: Black Ops Reputation Management

Our web presence is hugely important these days. I read this really interesting piece in New York magazine this week talking about the story of an online reputation management company and what it takes for them to "erase" the negatives and recreate a new web reputation.

The company services many high-powered, deep-pocketed individuals who have a lot at stake if a google search yields not-so-flattering results. The article details how it uses a variety of complex tactics to overpower all the negatives by creating many many positive associations (through dummy websites, for example)

This article brings to light the fact that as much as I trust google's organic search results, a lot of people are making a lot of money trying to control what I see. It also goes to show how much a good online reputation is worth.
