Our favorate GPS/mapping app Waze has been bought by google for 1.3 billion dollars. Why did google do that? To keep facebook, apple away from waze? Definitely. Earlier when apple launched its map service and received bad feedback, apple CEO has suggested consumer to use alternative apps, such as Waze. Apparently google was listening. The second reason is the fact that current google map service does not have user engagement and waze has been great in that area. Waze generates many of its maps by using GPS to track the movements of its nearly 50 million users thus provides real time traffic reports and the best route considering the traffic time. Either google is planning to add this feature by learning from waze or introduce waze as an alternative and generate revenue from that.
