While Walmart might be putting small Mom & Pops out of business, this is definitely not the case in Facebook. Local Walmart stores pages do not even get beyond 1000 fans, but local small stores have a much bigger following... while this might not be translated to sales, it's a good indication that Mom & Pops are not dead yet! (at least in the digital world)

I completely agree. And the interesting fact is that this is not only happening in the United States but also in other countries as well, and is not limited to shops but also artists, food trucks, campaigns, events and such. Many people find out about a particular shop/brand/event when a friend "likes" the shop's facebook page, thus the online version of word of mouth.
