Drop Wins the TechCrunch Boston Pitch-Off

A new location-based messaging app is in town and its called Drop! Developed by two Harvard Business School students, Drop is an "app out of Boston that lets you “drop” a message in a certain location, which friends will find as they enter that geo-fenced area," according to TechCrunch. So, if I want to send my husband a "good luck" message on his first day of work, I can "drop" the message at the address of his new office. When he walks in the door a message will appear on his phone letting him know that I care.

Drop user-interface.
Pretty fun, but how do you monetize such a service? Twitter and Instagram, social media powerhouses, have yet to earn  a penny of revenue, so does it matter? Philosophical discussions aside, the app, which launched late last week, won Boston's TechCrunch pitch off and has some promising excitement and buzz. The two founders (one of whom is a friend's husband, full disclosure) claim that their app has great revenue earning potential. According to TechCrunch, "the only thing advertisers like more than an engaged user base is location information, which is built right into Drop." Just off the top of my head, I think it would be awesome to Drop my friend a brand-sponsored message on her birthday at her favorite coffee spot for a minimal fee. It will be exciting to follow Drop and see how successful it becomes.
