Marriage of Music and Email

WSJ published an interesting article commenting on the value of fan emails to rock bands. Many times fans give up their addresses to access bands' websites or receive pre-sale codes. However, a study found that the fans who share emails and get free music in return a more likely to purchase directly from bands' websites than someone who gave up their emails for free (even though the difference might not account for much $10 vs. $3 it is an important consideration for management). Additionally, the bands could you use emails to leverage corporate sponsors interested in the same demographic as bands appeal to. Who knew there is an opportunity for marketing even in the interaction between your favorite band and your email?
