Amazon is stepping into new territory and taking Netflix's lead in developing its own original TV series. Amazon began to mine its user data to help figure out which show will become its own series. Amazon posted 14 different pilots on its website which were viewed by over 1 million people. From analyzing the viewer behavior on the site, Amazon came up with 20 pages of data and was able to narrow down to five pilots that will be turned into series. Some of this data includes comments, social sharing, and user ratings. The first original Amazon productions will be "Alpha House," a political comedy about how four politicians live together and "Betas," a comedy about tech entrepreneurs launch an app start-up in Silicon Valley.
Amazon believes that the TV industry "relies too heavily on studio tastemakers to decide what shows get made" and wants to improve the traditional TV development process by incorporating viewer feedback, making it a less risky way to bet on what shows to produce. While media companies do research on shows before they air, they don't do it on the scale Amazon is capable and used to. Amazon's method prompts debate on how the role of big data should play in the industry with some believing that "art shouldn't be crowd-sourced." I think that Amazon's approach is innovative and will prompt a change in the TV industry.
