Social media can help improve search engine optimization by providing a
forum to share links that point back to your website. The key seems to be in strategically
positioning yourself at the right place at the right time.
In canvassing various blogs and websites, I found some general themes
on the matter. In terms of being at the
right place, for instance, it is helpful to have another company, blog, or
website, on which to place your content that can ultimately link the reader back
to your website. The place where you
post your content should be a reputable site, obviously, that serves to enhance
and expand your current customer base, especially those customers you may have
had difficulty reaching.
Another general theme I saw was creating content that would make people
want to share, essentially capitalizing on the right time to publish something. On the creative side, thinking through if you
would share this information could help form what you produce. The challenge is that the time and cost that can
go into producing a video, picture, or story that people will want to share and
that they can tie back to you and your firm can be significant. However, the upfront costs would likely be
worth the downstream revenue if you are able to actively engage your customer
base.
Lastly, an interesting tactic is to figure out what your competitors
are doing. There are apparently tools that
allow you to do this, such as Open Site Explorer or Majectic SEO. These tools allow
you to see your competitors’ links, giving you the websites that your
competitors are using to link back to their own websites. This knowledge is useful in several ways and
some include helping you identify new customers, sources of links, and the
content your competitors are using. This
information will come at a cost, though.
