Donald Trump’s campaign booked out the homepage on YouTube for Election Day and the days leading up to it, leading all viewers to be directed to Trump ads upon arrival. Google insists that the decision to allow Trump to book out the masthead has nothing to do with political affiliation, and, starting next year, they are no longer going to allow advertisers to book out the main homepage slots for days at a time.
Trump spent roughly $2 million per day to book the masthead slot, yet Biden has actually outspent Trump when it comes to Google ads in general. While Trump spent $76 million overall on Google ads during this election period, Biden spent $80.4 million overall. This is also not the first time Trump has taken over YouTube’s homepage. Back in August, he booked the masthead for 96 hours during the Democratic National Convention. He has been focused on big ticket ad spends versus smaller individual ads. Though many Americans look to YouTube as their main news source, the effectiveness of Trump’s tactics is undetermined.
