HP is partnering with google to provide cloud printing which would assign an internet address to printers and enable users to print from any internet enabled device at anytime as well as on scheduled intervals. This will allow consumers to print documents from mobile devices and eliminate the need for installing print drivers. In addition, people will be able to print documents such as the newspaper or other documents on regularly scheduled intervals.
I believe that this is a very interesting and potentially lucrative idea for a number of reasons. First, it certainly will differentiate HP and provide them with the first mover advantage in the sector which will drive initial sales and maintain customers even after competitors have entered the market. In addition, it will eliminate many of the headaches associated with installing new printers and anything that saves consumers time and frustration usually has high demand. Finally, it should increase printer and even more importantly printer ink consumption as people continue to print increasingly more items from online retailers and e-commerce sites such as movie tickets, newspapers, photos, etc.
This development could even create a market for public printer kiosks. For example airports and other high traffic areas could provide printing services for a small fee. A business person who is constantly on the road could receive documents and presentations on their mobile device and simply email it to an airport printer before hopping on the plane.
This idea should be a win win for both HP and consumers!
