On Monday, June 7th, Yahoo is set to announce a relaunch of its Yahoo Profiles. Key to this relaunch is an "all-in" integration of Facebook Connect. So, what does an "all-in" integration mean? As stated in the official announcement: "people who use both Yahoo! and Facebook can link their accounts and view and share updates with friends across both networks". Here is an example from Tech Crunch of what the new Facebook and Yahoo mashup will look like:
I've been debating if this is a good move for Yahoo. I can see merits to both sides. On one hand, Yahoo's tie-in with Facebook is a first step in evolution of social media based search engines. On the other hand, the mashup raises many difficult questions for Yahoo. How will users react to this agreement when issues surrounding privacy are at an all time high? How will Yahoo be perceived as a brand going forward? And, just how long will it be before Facebook buys Yahoo outright.
