Tech nightmare

Yesterday I flew back to NYC and decided to use the mobile boarding pass option. Effectively, a bar code enabled boarding pass image is scanned off of one's smart phone. Like everything else with me and technology, it did not work, and I was asked to go back to the check in desk to obtain a paper boarding pass and then get back into the security line. Aside from being a hassle, what's the point in this mobile boarding pass option from the perspective of the airline? They aren't really concerned with being green. Is the cost of paper that much to them? The cost of the kiosks? Maybe they think that it differentiates them vis-a-vis other airlines? Well it doesn't. Everyone will eventually offer this (bad) service. Maybe airlines should spend more time figuring out how to get luggage to where it should go first. Then let's work on useless technologies.
