An interesting reflection on "everywhere marketing" and M2M technology

In the article posted here below, Jürgen Hase, vice president of the M2M Competence Center at Deutsche Telekom AG, explores the future of digital marketing, related to the adoption of M2M technology.
M2M stands for machine-to-machine communication. This innovative system allows machines exchanging digital information automatically, in an intelligent way. Citing the article " [...] M2M applications enable a high-bay warehouse rack to sound the alarm because stocks are running low and orders more parts automatically, or an ECG machine to maintain a constant watch on a patient’s state of health, reporting irregularities to a physician. In most cases, the data will be transferred by mobile telephony. Whatever the application, M2M devices must be equipped with SIM cards and the right wireless technology."
Applications of this technology are already a reality in healthcare and logistics and are rapidly expanding to consumer goods, automotive and energy. According to a research run from Machina Research, by 2020 sales of M2M devices will reach as much as $964bn.
Now, whether the estimate is reasonable or not, it is undisputable that applications for mobile digital marketing are definitely there. Among others, targeting advertising messages tailored to a specific potential customer in a specific location (An example is enabling providers to send vouchers in-store to potential customers who can redeem them on the spot, thanks to the possibility to use smart phones as payment devices).
