Happy Birthday SMS!`

The 20th anniversary of the text message has given cause for reflection on its life, the technological benefits it has brought to the society and industry, the financial structure that providers have built around the offering, and what the next evolution for this form of mobile communication might be. With alternatives such as the iMessage, Whatsapp and Groupme available as alternatives for smart phone users, text usage and the revenue associated with it is expected to decline. Will the text message be left in the dust with the likes of newspapers and desk top computers?

One thing that is an advantage for SMS is that it works for all carriers and handsets. It's difficult to imagine a time where everyone uses just one of the new messaging apps. Companies (like banks) that want to communicate with all their users need to use the service that everyone has. Perhaps in the future, companies could be incentivized to use a specific free messaging service, that falls back on SMS for users who don't yet have the software. Then eventually a new system could win if it adopts enough of the market. But it looks like SMS is here for a bit longer at least!
