More and more small businesses are taking advantage of huge secular growth opportunities in digital marketing to reach more customers. A recent survey published by local media research firm BIA/Kelsey found that 40% of small and medium sized businesses were planning to increase their digital marketing budget in the next year. Comparatively, only 3.7% stated that they were planning on reducing their online advertising spending, and 48% planned to maintain the same amount.
Small and mid sized firms have begun to pick up on the benefits of digital marketing, particularly to the younger demographics, and are using online ads with a wider scope. For example, in 2007 small businesses used on average three channels in their online advertising efforts. According to the new survey, the average
channels being used per business is now closer to 6, nearly doubling over the last half-decade.
The survey found that 52% of these businesses advertise via Facebook. Newspaper advertising trailed at 31%, and email marketing had a rate of 25%.
The survey also noted that there was room for growth in mobile marketing as very few small sized firms currently use the medium to connect with customers (20%). 30% of those surveyed were not aware of mobile opportunities.
