Bots Attacking Instagram

This article focuses on the influence of bots on marketing for one of the most popular social media networks, Instagram. In recent months, Instagram has started to crack down on accounts that exist on Instagram simply to generate "likes", followers, and comments on the posts of small businesses who pay these accounts for their services. These accounts might find users through hashtags or by looking at a business' competitors on Instagram, then will follow those users or like their photos with the hope of getting "likes" or followers in return for the business. It will be interesting to see how these services try to get around the recent efforts by Instagram to shut down this type of behavior - according to the article, marketers spent $570 million on "influencer marketing" on Instagram last year so it is clear that this is a channel where businesses see value that advertisers and marketers can capture.
