The idea of influencer marketing is nothing new. For years and years, celebrities of all types have been paid by brands to promote their products and services. With the rise of social media, a new frontier opened for brands to market. This led to the rise of social media influencers. Traditionally, one would assume that this included the front-page, red carpet type person. However, new firms help brands find "micro-influencers" with a more targeted audience that costs them less and is more influential in "follower" purchasing behavior. This article is quite interesting as it suggests that influencer marketing has come so far, that is no longer effective and may actually misrepresent brands and mislead followers.
