Each year, IBM publishes a post-Black Friday report on online retail performance data. While there are interesting conclusions to be drawn from the overall growth in online shopping, some of the more interesting data points are in the mobile and social media spaces:
- Mobile purchases increased with 24% of consumers purchasing items on a retailers' mobile site, up from 14.3% in 2011
- The iPad dominated online shopping, with almost 10% of all online shopping done on the device
- Social network referrals from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube constituted 34% of all online sales on Black Friday
These findings are just more evidence for the growing use of social media and mobile in the world of online shopping, and it will be interesting to see how these trends evolve on Cyber Monday.
