Microsoft unveils its 2013 plans for Skype Ads

As many of you probably heard, Microsoft is retiring Live Messenger and using Skype as the main instant messaging communicator.  In addition, the company unveiled its 2013 plans to launch ads on Skype. It's a plan to monetize its calling and messaging platform. Users will see promotions during their conversations or they can share sponsored content with each other. For example, advertisers are looking at interactive experiences where both parties on Skype can play with a car model. With regards to sponsored content, that is still to be determined. One idea is to have ads triggered by specific words. Although quite frankly, I don't particularly like this idea if it violates the privacy of the conversation. What's interesting is that they're also toying with the idea of having brands on skype. Followers of brands can join the group and see related content.  In any case, I think it's a great idea if Microsoft can find a way monetize Skype as it now has 280 million monthly users and growing at 40% year over year.
