Does Mobile Display 2012 = Online Display 1999?

An interesting article about mobile display.  The author compares today's mobile display marketing strategy as similar to the online display strategy in 1999.  In essence, he describes how there was a huge campaign for display advertising in 1999 that was utterly ineffective.  Advertisers noticed that search resulted in conversions, which led to Google. Most consumers didn't click on display ads and when they did, it was accidental. Now, executives are pushing for mobile advertising strategy and using display banners again.  However, didn't they learn their lesson from the past? Do they think that the results will any different or better than online display in 1999?

I find this pretty interesting. Maybe mobile banner ads are a necessary step in the evolution to finding the right way to advertise to mobile users, similar to how web banner ads served as a pre-cursor to web search ads.

I have no clue...but it will be interesting to see what direction it goes in.
