The smartphone photo explosion

Yes, the best camera is indeed the one that is with you when you need it - aka your smartphone. But when talking to “serious-amateur” photographers, they will almost unanimously say the best photo is rarely the one taken with your smartphone.

Having said that, the increasingly improved quality of smartphone cameras, mobile photo-editing capabilities, as well as the explosion of social media have definitely led to an exponential increase in the number of photos shot in the world. 300 million photos are uploaded daily on Facebook, which currently has 10,000 more photos stored than the library of Congress! 70% of Facebook activity revolves around photographs, while 7.3 million users actively use Instagram every day.

If an image is worth 1,000 words, then this flooding of images online provides an abundance of rich information that is potentially accessible to us, but on the other hand it is hard to search for. Will the web-search capabilities ever become that sophisticated that will enable users to accurately search image content?
