Why Are Brands Still "Renting" Audiences?

The days of renting audiences from large media companies are coming to an end.  There have been two waves in digital marketing: the first where companies invested heavily in their websites and display ads; and the second where companies invested heavily in social media.  The third wave is approaching, where companies will build audiences by driving them to a central hub via content marketing.
